The Serious Business of Not Being Too Serious

by | Oct 1, 2025 | Personal Development

Business is often painted as a world of stiff suits and serious conversations. But let’s be honest, those who thrive long-term in the business world usually know how to laugh at themselves and roll with the punches. Hitting your goals doesn’t require a permanent scowl or a vocabulary full of buzzwords. In fact, taking yourself too seriously often hurts you more than it helps you!

Be a human.

The most effective leaders and entrepreneurs understand that humility and humor are strengths, not weaknesses. When you’re able to admit you don’t have all the answers—or even laugh at your own mistakes—you become more relatable. People like working with real humans, not robots with perfect resumes.

Leave your ego at the door.

There’s a big difference between taking your work seriously and taking yourself seriously. The former is essential. The latter? Not so much. If you’re constantly trying to be the smartest person in the room or protect your pride at all costs, you’re missing opportunities to grow and collaborate. Strong businesses are built by people who are open to feedback, not obsessed with their own image.

Failure is easier when you can laugh.

Everyone fails. If you’re doing anything worthwhile, failure is inevitable. The problem arises when people see every setback as a personal indictment. When you take yourself too seriously, failure becomes humiliating. But if you can laugh at yourself and learn from the stumble, you recover faster—and you bring your team along with you.

People follow people, not perfection.

Humor and self-awareness are underrated leadership skills. No one wants to work with a perfectionist who can’t relax. A leader who can joke, admit a mistake, or make light of a tough situation builds trust and loyalty. You don’t need to be a comedian, but being approachable and real will make you someone people want to follow.

Balance is key.

This isn’t about being careless or turning everything into a joke. It’s about having the confidence to show up as your authentic self and lead without acting like you have it all figured out. When you drop the facade, people respect you more.

Create a culture people want to be part of.

Business is all about people. When you don’t take yourself too seriously, you make your environment more welcoming and creative. People feel safer to share ideas, take risks, and show up as themselves. That’s when the real magic starts to happen.

Stay grounded, stay real. At the end of the day, no one remembers the person who never made a mistake or never cracked a smile. They remember the leader who made them feel seen, heard, and human. So yes, take the mission seriously, but let yourself be a human doing meaningful work.
