Whether you’re trying to grow a business, advance your career, get better at a sport, improve your finances, or accomplish a personal goal, the process for success in any area of life is remarkably similar. The details change, but the roadmap stays pretty consistent.
A lot of people spend years searching for the perfect strategy, just the right opportunity, or a lucky breakthrough. Meanwhile, the people making progress are usually focused on a few simple fundamentals.
First, Figure Out Where You Actually Are

This step sounds obvious, but it’s one that many people avoid.
Most of us have fun thinking about future goals. It’s exciting to imagine where we could be a year from now. Taking an honest look at where we currently stand can be a little less exciting.
But here’s the thing: you can’t create a useful plan if you’re unclear about where you’re starting.
Take a real look at your situation. What are you doing well? Where are you struggling? Which habits are helping you move forward? Which habits seem to be slowing you down?
The more honest you are during this step, the easier everything else becomes.
Next, Get Clear About Where You Want to Go

Once you’ve identified your starting point, it’s time to decide on a destination.
This is where a lot of people stay vague. They want more success, more flexibility, more income, or more opportunities. Those are great desires, but they’re difficult to pursue because they’re hard to measure.
Instead of just wanting more, try to paint a clear picture of something you’re working toward. What does success look like for you? What exactly are you hoping to accomplish? What kind of life are you trying to build?
Clear direction makes decision-making much easier, so be specific about your goals and your vision!
Then, Find People Who’ve Already Made the Trip

This may be the most overlooked step of all.
Far too many people try to figure everything out on their own. There’s nothing wrong with independent thinking, but there is huge value in learning from people who have already achieved the results you’re pursuing.
Pay attention to what they do. Read the same books they read. Listen to their interviews. Study their habits. Learn from their mistakes so you don’t have to make every one of them yourself. And if you have the chance to communicate with them, make sure you have a couple of specific questions ready to go that will help get you further along in your pursuit.
Success leaves clues, and those clues are usually scattered throughout the stories of the people who have gone before you.
Keep It Simple
It’s not a complicated formula. Know where you are. Know where you want to go. Learn from people who are already there.
Those principles have helped people succeed in sports, business, leadership, and countless other areas of life. They may seem simple, but simple doesn’t mean ineffective.
Sometimes the best path forward is easier than we make it. You just need the honesty to assess your starting point, the vision to choose a destination, and the humility to learn from those who have already walked the road ahead.
Oh yeah, and you do need one more thing: the champion’s mentality!
